The other day I was helping a friend take some stuff to Goodwill, furniture and stuff that she doesn’t want to move to her new place when her current lease is up. Her daughter’s boyfriend was helping load and unload the rental truck and after dropping it off he was gushing over my Mustang.
He just couldn’t stop talking about how nice it is, and how it gets better gas mileage than his ten-year-old Honda Accord and has more power. It was his last two questions that really got me though.
He was watching me row through the gears from light to light and had to ask, “doesn’t that get annoying after a while?” Um, no. I prefer it. It’s more fun. Of course he thought that he just couldn’t do it.
I was driving as I normally do, quickly, despite the early evening traffic.
“So how many tickets have you gotten in this car?”
Wait? What? Tickets? Um, none. I’ve had no tickets in the last 5 years, and in the 5 years before that I only got a ticket for expired inspection sticker. These are the merits of age. The older you get, the easier it is to avoid those things, despite driving a flashy car.

The youth of today. It can’t be helped.

Despite getting the M3 when I wasn’t 24, I haven’t gotten a ticket in it.

Mustang is flashy? Don’t tell Hertz, they’ll charge more!

I got two speeding tickets ever... One in NY State in my Corvette, the other in France in a rental 3-series... Never lost points on my license.

And rightfully so!

I once got a lot of them. In a ‘79 Toyota Celica back in the dark ages when I was young(er). :D

I’ve lived in Virginia my whole life and in my 12 years of driving, most of those in cop magnet Hondas with exhausts, I’ve never gotten a ticket. The only time i’ve even been pulled was in my dad’s old F-150, and that was for not having my lights on (in my defense, it was a well-lit area).

He didn’t ask you how many bpm’s it does?

I average one speeding ticket every 15 years. Which means I’ve had two, and am due for another in about 11 years or so. I’ve never gotten a point on my license.

When he asked the first question did you consider asking him to grow a pair?

“Annoying after a while?” Yeah, I guess... but only in traffic jams, or perhaps after decades and decades of driving.

My dad hasn’t driven a manual since I’ve been alive and has received twice as many speeding tickets as me. I haven’t received a ticket in about eight years.

I’ve tried to explain to my recently licensed friends why I live driving a manual and the two common replies are “but driving manual is so complicated” and “that is unnecessary because most cars do that for you” Basically kids nowadays see cars as nothing but appliances, few want to do anything that keeps their attention away from their phone for more than a couple of mminutes, and are unwilling to learn.

It’s been 30 years. I’m still not tired of it.

Honestly I was just shocked that anyone that age didn’t get the fun aspect of it.

Hmm... well I guess I did use the plural form of “decade”, so mathematically speaking, [more than one decade] + [more than one decade] = at least 40 years. You still got time!

OK, you got me.
My dad has been telling me for years that I’ll get tired of stick shift. He’s still wrong..
